Tabatha Coffey Blows Up Salon Secrets on Dr Oz

tabatha coffey on dr ozMany salon and spa owners were probably cringing and covering their ears when Tabatha Coffey and secret salon employees went on an all-out expose on the Dr Oz show today.  In case you missed it, Tabatha and her secret cohorts spilled the beans on the dirtiest, most disgusting and downright dangerous practices that go on at salons and spas across the country.  For a long time, many more prestigious salons and spas pointed the finger to smaller ‘nail salons’ as the ones who don’t sanitize, disinfect or change the wax stick.  But Tabatha and her secret insiders pointed the fingers right back at them revealing that a staggering 75% of salons DO NOT disinfect, sanitize and clean up to industry standards and regulations.  OUCH!!!!!!!

Sounds like a nightmare for salon owners, right?  WRONG!  This is an open invitation for salon and spa owners to set themselves apart from the rest.  My advice to owners is to NOT sweep Tabatha’s comments under the rug, but bring them right back into the open.  Yes, I said it.  I want you to publicize Tabatha’s remarks to your clients.  Chances are, a few of your clients saw the episode and are now wondering about your salon.  They are thinking to themselves….”Hm…..is that sanitation solution they use for the nail utensils ever changed??? Tabatha said it wasn’t…”  Or “Hm…..do they double dip that wax stick?????  Tabatha said that could cause STDS!!”

In case you missed it, Tabatha revealed that SOME salons/spas don’t change the sanitizing solution for nail utensils often enough, making it practically useless against bacteria, refill expensive backbar products with cheaper products to save money, use Windex instead of Barbesil to clean cutting scissors and combs, double dip wax sticks and others…

Don’t let your clients wonder.  Don’t let Tabatha’s comments be the elephant in the room.

Update your website, Facebook, Twitter, in-salon literature, email marketing, etc….with a blurb that talks about how your salon takes cleanliness and hygiene to the highest level possible.  Let your customers know that you are NOT one of the 75% of salons who don’t.  Talk about your stringent cleaning procedures, talk about using a new wax stick for every dip, talk about bleaching the pedicure bowls thoroughly after each and every pedicure!!!  Most of all…assure them that what they heard on Dr Oz is NOT in any way how things are done at YOUR salon.

A video message from the owner would really hit the ball out of the park.  Walk through the salon while being video taped and SHOW how you clean, what types of sanitation cleansers you use.  Remind your clients why they pay more to come to YOUR salon…because they don’t want to take the chance of ending up in a chair at one of the other 75%.

Happy cleaning my friends!

Day Spa Owner Suggests National Day of Free Services for Cancer Patients

Valentina Chistova, owner of Aquamedica Salon and Day Spa in New Jersey, is getting ready to host her 8th annual Just for Her event.  On the day of the event, the doors to Aquamedica are closed to the public to host a day of free salon and spa services to cancer patients and survivors.  The event takes place on the last Monday in October and coincides with national Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Chistova and family got involved in hosting the event several years ago.  Chistova said, “At first, we started collecting money for good causes. Then we said, how can we do more? How can we truly TOUCH the lives of those who are affected? So, we decided to actually put OUR HANDS on people who need it, instead of just sending out checks. “

The ‘Just for Her’ salon and spa day offers cancer patients and survivors a complimentary day of beauty, relaxation, and gourmet delights.  For the past 7 years, Chistova and her generous staff have donated their hands and hearts to service these brave women.  The event also raises money to benefit the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey.

The special day is very near and dear to Valentina and her family.  Every generation of their family has had cancer, including Valentina’s mother.  “Almost every family has been affected by this terrible disease, or knows another family who has been,” says Chistova, “I want to show people that we care and that we can fight together.”  This year, Chistova is calling upon all spas, salons and beauty industry resources across the country to participate in the event and help spread the word.

Chistova says the day has a tremendous impact on the women who participate.  “One woman in particular who came for a massage pulled me to the side and cried and said ‘I never thought I would be able to show anyone my body or let anyone touch it….after having the massage I feel more comfortable and now I can see that I am still myself, I am still whole”

Chistova goes on to say, “The event allows salons and spas to give their hands and hearts for people that are in need, but too shy to ask.  We hope that many more salons and spas will a ‘Just for Her’ event, and we can make the last Monday in October a national day for the entire beauty industry.”

Any salon, day spa, or beauty industry source that would like to host a ‘Just for Her event’ or would like to help publicize the event should contact Valentina at 732.890.0404 or info@dayspaexpert.com

Red Bank Salon Introduces Creative Nights for Local Artists

Glen Goldbaum 72, Red Bank’s fastest growing salon, uses their space to support local artists, photographers and musicians.  Since opening on Red Bank’s west side a little over a year ago, the salon has used its well-appointed brick studio interior and spacious outdoor garden to host live performances by local artists, art exhibits and major celebrations.

The salon draws its name from owner and master stylist, Glen Goldbaum.  Originally a New York stylist and Vidal Sassoon Educator, Glen was intrigued with Red Bank’s hip Westside. “I felt I had unearthed a mountain of gold.  I couldn’t believe the style, attitude and personality.  It was screaming with opportunity, and I could hear it.”

Upon opening his Red Bank location in June of 2008, Glen sought to add energy and excitement to the West Side.  According to Glen, he didn’t want his space to be limited to the usual salon services.  He launched ‘Creative Nights’ shortly after opening, as a way to allow others to get to know is salon and as a platform to introduce local artists, musicians and photographers.

Since opening, Glen and staff have played host to local favorites such as Def Jam recording artist Laura Warshauer, singer/songwriter Quincy Mumford, and Random Test, Red Bank’s hottest Reggae band.  The events draw crowds of 100+ people who come to meet Glen, dance, party and mingle.

Glen’s unique business style has been a huge success.  Now, just over 1 year since opening, Glen has added 10 additional staff members (he started with just one) and is averaging upwards of 75 new clients per month.

This summer, Glen has more events planned including live concerts and a burlesque show.  “It’s all about feeling good. For me, it doesn’t matter whether it’s because we just gave them a great cut, or because they just enjoyed listening to some live music in our outdoor garden.  If we can make people look and feel their best, I’m happy.
